Used CD key for multiplayer

A friend of mine is willing to start playing COD4 and needs to buy the game to be able to join in the servers. We looked on specialised websites, but there's one thing we are not quite sure of; obviously the lower prices are the already used games, but does the fact that they have already been used by someone else, on a different computer, prevent my friend from playing online ? The CD key had already been used in the past so we thought that it might be a problem, but since the first owner stopped playing we just don't know...

Beast > Oh I didn't know that website, looks very interesting. Unfortunately their games library is not really huge for France and CoD4 isn't available here yet :/

Lane > Yes I remember we could share a CD key with my brother when he used to play... But you cannot be online at the same time then if you share your CD key with someone else, can you?
