My kid did the same thing with Minecraft. A little google, a little chatting, and suddenly he's modifying the game, downloading unkown things from unkown sources. Ultimately he lost is minecraft account - he thinks someone got his password and changed it. Now he only plays if he borrows some one elses. In the mean time, I told him a re-format was the only way.....I would do it. I'm tired of spending 3 to 5 hours trying to clean up some one elses machine because they have to play flash games, enable Java, or let employees surf porn sites at work. I suppose if I was getting paid $50/hr to clean up computers, I'd be more willing to fix their problem, instead using a known solution.
I've had a few people come to me with computer problems, and I tell them I don't really understand these new computers today, I was a lot better with the old ones. They go oh, are you using windows 8 or 10? I reply - windows 7....I think? Cell phones are another one I completely forgot how to fix. I used to put mods on both mine and my buddies Android phone - and answer tons of questions for Smart Phone newbies. Now when they ask for help, I show them this beat up Otterbox, and say - I only have a s3 - I'm 3 generations behind now. I don't really know anything about these new phones.
you will never be able to trust your kids computer 100% now until you reformat it and start from scratch. You could simply re-install windows with out formatting it, but if he runs an old download, you would be right back in the same place.
I bumped my kid up to windows 8 and he has to ask me when he wants to install software. I've found dialogue boxes 3 days after he last used the computer for Anti-virus upgrade because he knows he's not to install anything. I've scared him from trying windows 10
