well, just sounds.
i,ve come to the conclusion that alot of players under utilize / under estimate the value of good sound in COD games. with the right set-up its like having a sound only uav.
while spectating others i notice many times that whats obvious to me, such as an enemy on the other side of the wall,door,building,etc... sounds like the shuffling of grass, crunching of snow, footsteps on wood, metal.... are not being heard or utilized by the player i'm speccing. (or if they are heard, the direction is not evident to them).
one of the biggest ah-ha moments i've ever had in gaming was when i upgraded to a creative x-fi sound card (pci) and a 5.1 analog headset (older version of this one:
http://www.speedlink.com/?p=2&cat=183&pid=23553&paus=1 ). i like them so much they lasted through at least three computer upgrades.
i can here everyone around me and know what direction they are in.
its not as effective on a crowded map with lots of peeps running around.
there of course counters, dead silence/ninja or try not running everywhere.
in black ops there is also this setting: seta snd_losOcclusion "0"
dont buy a usb headset if you are planning on using a dedicated sound card. buy one with analog connections that plugs directly into your sound card.

If I turn up my game volume, I can hear everything. However, that means that everyone who is using voice chat is also blaring in my ears. I like to get the chat because they tell where the other team is and it helps. Hard to play where everyone is muted.
I'm at work now but I'll check it out. If you know of a fix to turn the game volume up while being able to turn the team chat down, please post it! That would be of great help! I have a SB Live! 24 Sound Card with the latest drivers.

how true this is! I've been killed countless of times because my on board sound card and stereo headphones don't illustrate the direction of the sound...at all. *sigh

not in COD4. you could try setting sound quality to high 44khz in game and windows, (if its not there already) and see if it helps.
about your card:
Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit
The Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit (SB0410) was not actually a member of the Sound Blaster Live! family, because it lacked the EMU10k1/10k2 processor. It was a stripped down version of the Audigy Value, with an SNR of 100 dB, software based EAX, no advanced resolution DVD-Audio Playback, and no Dolby Digital 5.1 or Dolby Digital EX 6.1 playback. A proof of this is that on Linux operating systems, when using the ALSA sound system, the module that is used for the Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit is snd-ca0106, while the module that is used by the Sound Blaster Live! is snd-emu10k1.

What does this do? I assume the normal setting is "1". I am not much of a "tweaker" in games so my knowledge is limited. Thanks!

to make the game more realistic blkops uses the material in between you and the sound source to adjust the volume of that sound (instead of just distance). so if you are next to a window, sound outside the building will be loud. but if you are next to a brick wall sound outside might not be heard at all.
setting this to 0 was originally used as a tweak for onboard sound users to raise fps. (because black ops is very cpu dependent and onboard sound uses the cpu for proccessing).
but it also gives a distinct advantage in situational awareness. especially in gametypes like s&d because it lets you hear planting and diffusing from a much greater distance.
aon would probably cvar check it and kick, but vac is all we got.
maybe lager can write a B3 plugin to check cvars, and md5's while he's at it. (i know, probably unlikely without a service running on the client). :read:

I know what you are saying with the headphones they do help.
If I was to compete in a turney or something I would use mine more. I mainly use my computer speakers, for me they are more conveniet. When my wife calls me or the phone rings I can get it easyer. Most of the time I just enjoy playing and I don't have to put in the effort into play like in a tourament.
