I know that would get in the way of my thumb because of the way i grip my mouse....

I never hit the thumb buttons by mistake. There is still room to grip with your thumb and not hit the buttons.

Very nice mouse, I use one with 4 extra buttons. Not sure what I would do with 17 buttons, especially in an FPS.
